Indian Passport Renewal in USA: The Complete 2026 Guide by State

Your renewal is processed by the Indian mission that holds jurisdiction over your state of residence. As of July 2026 there are nine missions serving the US, including the newer consulates in Seattle, Boston, and Los Angeles, which redrew the older seven-mission map. This table reflects the Embassy of India's current official jurisdiction list. Each city guide covers local VFS centers, courier logistics, and consulate-specific quirks.

Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands fall under CGI Atlanta. Guam falls under CGI San Francisco. If you recently moved states, apply through the consulate for your current residential address, and expect to show proof of address in that state.

The process, end to end

Five stages, whichever consulate you fall under:

1. Online application. Fill the passport re-issue application on the Global Passport Seva portal, note your Application Reference Number (ARN), then print and sign the form. The portal asks for your current passport details, US address, and family particulars.
2. VFS submission. Register on VFS Global, pay the fees, and either book an appointment at a VFS Indian Consular Application Centre or mail your complete packet with a prepaid return label. Most applicants outside major metros use the mail-in route.
3. Consulate processing. VFS forwards your file to your jurisdiction consulate, which verifies documents and approves the re-issue.
4. Printing and dispatch. Approved passports are printed and handed back to VFS for courier return along with your old, cancelled passport.
5. Delivery. Track status on the VFS portal until the packet reaches your door.

Fees: what you will actually pay

Pay by money order or ACH where offered to skip the 3.75% card fee. Fees are non-refundable even if the application is rejected, which is why getting the packet right the first time matters.

Documents: the short list

For a standard adult renewal you need the printed and signed application, your current passport plus photocopies of the first and last pages, proof of US legal status (visa, green card, EAD, or I-797), proof of US address, and photographs to spec. Notarized copies are required for mail-in applications. The exact set shifts with your situation, so use the complete documents checklist before you seal the envelope.

Photos: two formats, and strict about which goes where

Printed photos mailed to VFS USA are accepted at either 51x51mm (2x2 inch) or 35x45mm. VFS's own checklist PDFs vary on which size they name (the May 2026 adult and minor re-issue checklists say 35x45mm, other VFS materials say 2x2 inch), so match the checklist PDF in your own application package and bring both sizes if you are unsure. The digital upload on the Passport Seva portal is 35x45mm at 630x810 pixels, and a square 2x2 inch digital file is rejected by the portal, so do not upload a square crop even when your prints are 2x2. Either way: plain white background, ICAO compliant, taken within the last 6 months, no glasses, no shadows. Get two identical prints plus the digital copy for the online form.

How long it takes

Standard processing runs 3 to 6 weeks door to door: roughly a week for VFS intake, 1 to 3 weeks at the consulate, and courier time on both ends. Straightforward renewals with no data changes clear fastest. Police verification

Most clean re-issues from the US are processed without fresh police verification. It gets triggered when your Indian address changed, your particulars changed, your previous passport had incomplete verification, or the consulate flags something in your file. Special cases
