Missed the OCI update window after a passport renewal? What actually happens

You renewed your Indian passport, life got busy, and now a forum thread has you convinced that missing the "90 day" OCI update voided your card and killed your trip to India. It did not. Most of the scary advice online rests on rules retired in April 2021. Here is what the current guidance says, what missing the window costs, and how to get back in order.

What does the OCI update rule actually require in 2026?

Start with who the rule covers. The OCI services portal FAQ says a cardholder may upload a copy of the new passport and a recent photo under "OCI Miscellaneous Services" at ociservices.gov.in "each time a new passport is issued up to 20 years of age and once after completing 50 years of age." So the stated duty covers cardholders 20 or younger (every renewal) and those past 50 (once). For ages 21 to 49, the Ministry of Home Affairs baseline does not mandate the upload at all.

The consulates muddy this: the Embassy of India in Washington DC instructs cardholders to upload irrespective of age, while CGI Atlanta and the portal FAQ mirror the narrower MHA wording. The practical answer: upload whatever your age. It is quick and removes the one mismatch an airline agent can question.

Three more details matter.

First, the clock runs from when you receive the new passport, not its printed issue date. The official wording is "within 3 months of receipt of the new passport," so weeks spent in printing and courier do not count against you.

Second, the requirement is an online upload, not a new card. Between 21 and 49, a renewed passport never requires a new physical OCI card; that idea is a holdover from the pre-2021 regime. The big exception: if you received OCI as a minor, a new passport after you turn 20 triggers a mandatory one-time re-issue of the card itself. Third, at 50 or older, the MEA advisory says the OCI record "must be renewed only once after the issuance of a new passport," which post-2021 means the same online upload, done once after you complete 50. Carve-outs exist for 10 year passports issued between ages 41 and 49 and for OCIs first issued after 50 (see the FAQ).

And since April 1, 2026, a late update is no longer free: the portal FAQ states that updating passport details after three months of receipt "will be processed by charging a fee of US $25." Before that, there was no stated penalty.

I missed the window. What actually happens?

The honest answer: you pay US $25 and do the same upload you would have done anyway. That is the entire consequence for an adult. No cancellation, no ban, no interview, no re-application.

Procedures also vary by jurisdiction. HCI Ottawa, for example, routes late updates through a BLS centre at CAD 39 plus service charges. Check your own consulate's OCI page before paying anyone anything.

One counting gotcha from recent firsthand reports: the portal treats "3 months" as 90 flat days, counting each month as 30. A passport issued March 17 was rejected as late on June 15, two days before the calendar three-month mark. If you are cutting it close, submit with a week to spare, and screenshot any rejection message the same day.

A late application may also not glide through online at all. Toronto-jurisdiction cardholders report the portal rejecting the late submission outright, followed by an email from the consulate asking for a fresh application ID, with payment taken in person at the BLS counter. Counter staff are often unfamiliar with the new process, so carry the rejection or acknowledgement email, an address proof, the OCI card, and both passports, and budget an extra phone call or two to get routed correctly.

Can I travel to India if I never updated my OCI?

For anyone 21 or older, yes, and this is not just anecdote. The Ministry of External Affairs issued a formal advisory after OCI holders were refused boarding over mismatched passport numbers. It states that Indian immigration authorities will permit entry and exit "on the strength of OCI card even if it contains the old passport number," for every cardholder except those aged 20 or younger. That covers you at 35 and at 62, and since it covers exit too, a stale record does not trap you inside India.

So why do denied-boarding stories still exist? Because the choke point is not Indian immigration, it is the airline check-in counter. A passport number that does not match the OCI card is exactly the kind of mismatch a cautious agent escalates. Plenty of travelers fly with a mismatched number and hear nothing; others lose an hour at the counter.

The rational move is to remove the ambiguity before you fly:

1. Do the online update now, even inside the late-fee zone. Submission generates an automatic acknowledgement email, and consulate guidance confirms travel is unrestricted between the new passport's issuance and final acknowledgement.
2. Print that acknowledgement and keep a copy on your phone.

Fill out the e-Arrival Card at indianvisaonline.gov.in/earrival within 72 hours of departure. It replaced the paper disembarkation card in October 2025, applies to OCI cardholders, is free, and airlines have begun checking it at check-in.

1. Carry your OCI card, your new passport (CGI San Francisco expects six or more months of validity), and your old passport, which carries the number printed on your card. If it was surrendered or lost, the acknowledgement email does the explaining.

With that stack, an airline agent has nothing left to question. One exception: if your renewal also changed your name, for example after marriage, a name change requires a physical OCI re-issue, not just the upload.

How do I fix a late OCI update?

The late fix is the normal process plus the fee. Open OCI Miscellaneous Services on the portal, choose the passport update service, enter your OCI and new passport details, and upload the passport copy and a recent photo. US missions including San Francisco and Atlanta specify a photo not more than 30 days old, so use a fresh one. The acknowledgement email arrives on submission; final confirmation can take a few weeks, and you do not need to wait for it to travel.

There is no apology form or explanation letter, just the fee, which you should confirm with your consulate when you apply since schedules and routing vary. Is it different for my child?

Yes, and this is the one place to be genuinely careful rather than calm. Cardholders 20 or younger need the update each time a new passport is issued, and the MEA advisory's blanket travel permission explicitly excludes them. There is an escape hatch, but it is conditional: CGI New York's guidelines let a cardholder below 20 travel on the old-numbered card "subject to the condition that along with the new passport, the OCI cardholder carries old passport mentioned in the OCI card." No old passport, no condition met; complete the update before booking anything.

Two caveats: the advisory predates the April 2021 relaxation, so "renewing the card" now means the online upload in most cases, and consular practice for minors is the least uniform part of this topic. The safe play is boring: update first, carry the acknowledgement, bring both passports if you have them.
