When is a paid physical OCI re-issue actually mandatory?

A new printed OCI card through VFS Global is required only in these cases:

• You acquired the OCI card before turning 20 and obtained a new passport after turning 20 (the main passport-related trigger).
• Your OCI card is lost or damaged.
• Change of name, including a name change after marriage.
• Change of nationality (other than to Pakistan or Bangladesh).

1. Go to ociservices.gov.in and open the "OCI Miscellaneous Services" option.
2. Enter your OCI and passport details and start the passport-update application.
3. Upload a copy of your new passport and a recent photograph not more than 30 days old.
4. Submit. You receive an automatic acknowledgement email immediately.
5. After verification, you receive a confirmation email that your updated details are on record.

That is the whole process. There is no fee, and it stays online. Keep both emails (the acknowledgement and the final confirmation) with your travel documents.

What is the 3-month deadline, and what happens if I miss it?

You should complete the online passport update within three months of receiving your new passport. If you do it inside that window, it is free and stays on the online route.

If you miss the three-month window, two things change:

• Charges apply. The update is no longer gratis.
• The route changes. The portal FAQ says a late update is processed with the US $25 fee; some missions additionally route late updates through their outsourcing agency (VFS in the US, BLS in Canada) instead of the free online "OCI Miscellaneous Services" route, so check your consulate's instructions if you are past the window.

So the cost of delay is real but bounded: you lose the free, fully online path. The fix is simple, do the upload promptly after your new passport arrives.

Can I travel to or from India while the OCI update is pending?

Yes. There is no restriction on travel to or from India during the period from the date your new passport is issued until the date of final acknowledgement of your documents in the online system. You do not have to wait for the update to finish before flying.

You travel with:

• Your OCI card, and
• Your current valid passport (with a minimum validity of six months or more).

The OCI card carries a lifelong U-visa, so the practical requirement at immigration is a valid passport plus the OCI card. This holds even if your OCI booklet still prints an old passport number.

One newer requirement applies regardless of OCI status: since October 1, 2025, every foreign national, OCI cardholders included, must submit the free e-Arrival Card at indianvisaonline.gov.in/earrival, up to 72 hours before arrival. The paper disembarkation card has been discontinued, and airlines increasingly ask for it at check-in.

Do I need to wait for the final confirmation email to travel?

No. The acknowledgement (submission) email is sufficient to travel. You do not need to hold the final confirmation email, which can take several weeks.

Because the official rule explicitly removes any travel restriction during the period until final online acknowledgement, the moment you have submitted and received your automatic acknowledgement, you are clear to fly with your OCI card and current valid passport. Carry a copy of that acknowledgement email along with your documents.

My OCI card shows my old passport number. Is that a problem?

No. A mismatched passport number on the OCI card is normal and expected. Your OCI card is printed once and references the passport you held at that time. When you renew your passport, the card keeps showing the old number, and that does not invalidate your lifelong U-visa.

This is the single biggest fear travelers have, and it is misplaced. Immigration relies on your current valid passport plus the OCI card as the pair. The printed old number on the card does not cause a problem, as long as you have completed (or at minimum submitted) the online passport update and carry a passport with six or more months of validity.

If you want the printed number to match, that only changes through a physical re-issue, which is required only in the mandatory cases listed above, not simply because the number is now different.

What about children and minors holding OCI?

A child can travel with their OCI card and current valid passport while the online update is pending, exactly like an adult. The same "no travel restriction until final acknowledgement" rule applies, so a minor whose update is in progress is not grounded.

Can you travel to India while the OCI update is pending?
